Trivia Answers
1) Shaun Newtons cousin is no other then Wyatt Thomas. We have been honored ironically with Shaun's presence this week and it's odd since we have been talking about him as of late. Shaun has not been home in five years for Christmas due to his demanding work schedule. It's nice to have him back.
2) Coach Bob's brother Chuck was as none of you guessed it a professional wrestler.

Better late then never and I apologize, but as you all know, the time of the season is keeping us all very busy. I just wanted to give my review of this past weekend. All in all I am, along with the rest of the coaching staff very impressed with the way the team responded at the County meet. To be honest the team as whole (varsity, B- team, and J.V,) all wrestled beyond my expectations. Not only did we do better then we have in the past three years but our B team stepped up and beat up on some guys. Just a few matches that stand out in my mind is Jacob Beaver losing 12-2 with 7 seconds left and pinning his kids. As well as Vinny Stefanko's impressive win in the first match against the number 3 seeded kid from Birch Run. I can go on and on with matches but we were all there and we all saw the great matches. With all that said, it was a great weekend to see where we stand and the growth that we have made this season thus far. This weekend was a great indication to see how much more we are capable of. We have a lot of room for improvement and it's nice to see we are on the right track. We are finally starting to buy into the system and with time I hope that we will be ready to respond when the right time comes.
With that all said, coach Bob and I have been talking and he might be upset with me letting the cat out of the bag so early but I'm just too excited. Coach Bob has had a great idea and a Vision that will take the County meet to a new level. He has the idea and the rest of the Coaching staff agrees with him that next year we want to step up the ante. With cooperation of the athletic department and the school we hope that next year we can invite 32 of the top elite teams from Michigan and Ohio to come and participate in the new Michigan Elite 32 wrestling tournament. We invite the best to come weigh in shoulder to shoulder on Friday mid afternoon next year. We then will wrestle two rounds of championships and a round of consolations. After that we will come back on Sat. and finish up the tournament. We want this tournament to be a tournament that people beg to come to. Again it is not final but hopefully next week we can get the go ahead. Look forward to it and hope you all have a merry Christmas.
Trevor.

I just want to say how amazing and proud I am to be apart of such a great team and great people. Our family that we adopted this year came to the school and picked up their gifts today. The single mother of three was so overwhelmed with gratitude today and was in tear because the way you all stepped up and helped out this Christmas season. We really do have great parents and kids and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

I just want to put a reminder out there of the adopt a family that we do every year. This is something that we have been doing for a long time now and it is a great fundraiser. This is something that I did in College every year and we took the presents to the kids and families. It is something that is near to me and it is a great feeling. I was a college student not to long ago with very limited money but still found a way to give back. Please think of the less fortunate at this time and if you have any questions at all please email me at Hoosier174@gmail.com. I will answer any questions you have. Thanks again and Happy Holidays.

Trivia Question # 1
This is just a personal preference
Trivia Question # 2
Coach Smith has tricked most of you with this one. Shaun Newton was our first wrestler to attend U of M. Shaun went to U of M and walked on as a freshman and stuck with it for four years and rallied a great wrestling career. He also graduated with an Aeronautical Engineering degree and currently live out in Washington with is wife and two kids and works for Boeing. Shaun is another one of Davison's success stories that many have not heard about.

I just wanted to say what a nice job we did this weekend. I was really concerned going into it after our down performance on Wednesday, but our kids really did a great job. The team looked like the same team that wrestled against Oxford and the same team that wrestled down in Ohio. I was just really happy to see the way we performed this weekend. I was also really happy with all the the support and help we got from parents this weekend. The Chase Challenge really ran smooth because of your help. The spread down stairs was amazing too. A lot of parents stepped up and it showed and we thank you for that. Coach Smith would like to send a special thanks to Mr. Schlack and Mrs. Lapeer for their contribution to the outstanding J.V. tournament. It was hard to do last minute but a job well done.

Alright parents,
Last week was a great season opening week for us. As we all know we wrestled Oxford on wens. and pulled a win over them. Thurs we wrestled Rochester and beat them after they have gained victories over us over the past two years. Then we followed that with a loss over Lake Fenton. I know this was an upsetting loss but we learned a lot from it and we got a lot better because of it. We continued on to Saturday, where we sent 14 guys down to Walsh High School in Ohio. The Cards wrestled four great duals and gained victories in all. Ohio was a great experience for the guys because for one its nice to get the team away and staying together (like in a hotel). It's where they create a stronger bond and develop that attitude where they actually want to fight not only for themselves but for their team as well. Also with these four duals we wrestled very hard and again with guts. There was not one easy dual. We had hard matches through out the entire day. Ill never forget Hankens showing us how to get of your back.
We also took the remaining guys to the Grand Blanc Invite where we had a great showing. Patrick Rooker coming up with the Gold and Jacob Madrigal showing us what hes got as well, with picking up the Silver. All of our guys wrestled tough over the weekend and it was most certainly a weekend of growth. It make me personally so excited that I have been fortunate enough to come back to Davison and witness these kids grow. It is really fun watching these kids wrestle and even more fun watching them grow as wrestlers.
With that said, we are going to have another tough and busy week in front of us. Wens we wrestle DCC and Saturday we have the Chase Challenges in our house. I look forward to seeing you all and GO CARDS!!!

Man was last night exciting!!! Again I know we have missed a beat but from when I left here 6 years ago until now. It feels as if we haven't. With that said we have a lot of room to grow here. There are a lot of point out there they we did not pick up. Which that is fine because we do not want to peak at the first dual. It is going to be a long season. The reason we schedule Oxford so early is so that we could wrestle a great team and see where we stand. Well we know where we stand and we know how we can help our guys. Yesterday was exciting, not just for our varsity guys but our B team and J.V. team. Everyone went out and wrestled with guts. We keep saying if you can put together a full six or seven minutes, then you can make things happen. Now with that said we really hope Ryan Thick is doing alright and I'm waiting to hear back on how he is doing. No one wants to see that and our thoughts go out to him and his family. But now we need to move on and get ready for Rochester and Lake Fenton. See you all tonight and thanks for the support.

Yesterday we had a great practice. We are just so excited with the way the guys are working. We have such hard working group already and that really motivates us as coaches. Yesterday we watched Patrick Rooker and Justin Oliver go for 10 minutes with no one getting a take down. They both push the action and were dead tired but no one was going to give up a take down at any cost. That's impressive to watch and is very exciting. I even got in there yesterday and whooped on some kids but I'm paying for it today. Can't wait for Oxford, so we can see where we are.

As for Triva question number 1 most of you were correct. It was 2005, we had 4 state champions in 2005. One being myself, another being Mr. Metcalf, as well as Kyle Chittick, and John Reader.
As for Triva question number 2 I was the only one right. this one is a little more tickier then the others. Coach Hall is indeed the odd man out. The three of us wrestled for Indiana Unverisity. Hittle and Stevens wrestled for IU back in 1985 and 1986 if my memory serves me right, I obviously 2005-2010. Coach Hall on the other hand wrestled for our rival... Purdue!!!

Triva Answers:
1) The brothers that didn't belong was as you all guessed it, the Phillip Brothers. The Streeter, Whitman, Metcalf, and Perry Brothers all wrestled with each other at the same time. In my opinion the reason that these brother were all so tuff was because they had each other to push one another. There is no better work out partner then your brother. Some of you may know but no one wants to be beat up by their brother and I for sure was not going to let my brother take me down.
2) As for weather we beat St. Eds... well we did. We beat them back in 2004 at Medina. We have never beat them in a dual format. besides our J.V. team who beat Ed's J.V. team back in 2002.

So you parents know the guys have the next week off of work outs. We want to give the guys the next week to get rested, relax, and ready for season. This means we do not want them to lace up their wrestling shoes or step on the mat... ANYWHERE. We are giving them this time off to rest their minds and bodies but also to get their homework and school projects done. To get their grades up if they have to, suck up to their teachers, clean their rooms, do their laundry, do the dishes, break up with all non understanding girlfriends if need be. The goal is to get rid of all distractions and be ready to hit the ground sprinting. We have on 11 days, so lets get ready to go!!

We sent four guys out to Super32 tournament this weekend. We got a lot of good matches in and we lost some tough ones. As a former wrestler and now a coach I kind of see things a little differentially. As a wrestler I know the feeling of going to all these tournament and wanting to win every match. I also know the feeling of losing matches that I knew I probably should have won. But as a man of the sport for the last 20 years, I can say this will not be the last lost that we take!!! The most important thing we can do is look at what we have accomplished and be happy with it and move on. The matches that we lost… well that’s a different story. The matches that we lose are the most important matches. The matches that we lose are the ones that we can learn the most from. We must take those matches as a learning tool. We can look back and see what we did wrong and see how we can improve. Because as wrestlers and humans we can always improve!!! We can walk away from the lost bout saying well I need to improve my shape, my technique, my physical and mental toughness. Maybe I need to be more aggressive or maybe I just wasn't prepared. These are the questions that I always asked myself and I figured it out and I attacked the problem. This is why going to these tournaments are important. They are important so we can work the kinks out early. We can figure out what we need to work on and fix the problem early. So I just want to say congrats to the guys who went and let’s start working on the problems!!!

As of yesterday we have 41 wrestlers signed up for season this year. It is going to be an exciting season. We have the rest of this week and all of next week for Pre- season. Then we will take a week off and then season will be here and we will hit it hard. The guys are doing a great job and I’m thinking that (Just like the six sense that dogs have when they can sense something wrong, or the sixth sense of Adults with many many years behind them sensing bad weather in their bones) these kids sixth sense is kicking in and that they too can sense a great season coming. Again Coach Hall, Coach Smith, Coach Ward, and I can't stop talking about how excited we are. Go Cards!!!

As for the Triva:
1.) Davison faced Bedford in the semi- finals (with Casey Streeter pinning his opponent in overtime), sending us to the finals over Novi/
2.) Coach Elliot wrestled at LSU untill they got rid of their program. Coach Elliot's teammate and roomate was no other then Iowa States head coach Kevin Jackson.

More than half of you got the trivia right. John Phillips was Coach Halls first State Champion. It was an exciting day and John was the beginning of many more to come. Chase won States the year after and unfortunately Joe Streeter wasn't a State Champion but he should of been and he was a blast to watch wrestle. As for the second one, 2000 was the year that Davison won its first State title under Coach Halls helm. It was an amazing tournament and if it wasn't for Davison's Casey Streeter, coming back from a 7-2 deficit to put it into overtime and pinning his kid in overtime for bonus points, Davison would have not made it out of semis. Then Davison went on and took care of Bedford in the finals.

I just want to say Congrats to Terry who placed 1st this weekend at the Grappler Fall Classic. He had some tough competition but still set a precedent this weekend for what is expected out of our Cardinals with a 13-3 victory over Logan Marciki in the finals.
Coming soon is the Super 32 tournament and I would like for as many of our wrestler to attend this tournament as possible. For one there is going to be great competition, secondly every match that we can get helps us. Thirdly it gets us in the mind set that wrestling season is here and it's time to get started. Finally it helps give each of our athletes an idea of where they stand and possibly an idea of where they need to be. I know we already have a few guys signed up to go down there, I just hope they follow through with going and that we can get a few more guys.
Another thing I would like to say is thank you Mr. Oliver for holding a run at your place this weekend and having a little cookout and bon fire afterwards. It is a great thing for our guys to stick together as a team and create this bond early. It gives them a reason to fight for each other out there on the mat. It also keeps them heading in the right direction and keeps them out of trouble.

Alright Parents and Cardinal fans, here is the first post. I just want to start out by saying how excited I am to be back in Cardinal Country. It has been a dream of mine since I was a freshman in High school to come back here and coach and it’s a great feeling to know I’m back where I belong. As for the team, we have been working out very hard and making great gains. We just got back today from a week and half off and they hit it hard. They went for a 3 mile run in the rain, then we hit the weights hard and finished up with sprints in the gym. They are starting to learn what it’s all about. One thing that I keep emphasizing to them is that everyone (Oxford, Lake Fenton, Hartland, etc.) is already doing what we are doing right now. The difference is how much they put into each workout. The amount of intensity and attitude that they put into each workout. Too many wrestlers in the sport of wrestling go through the paces and remain comfortable because it is easier. We need to get out of our comfort zone and the moment we feel tired is when we have to take a shot and take our opponents down. The moment that we are tired is most likely the same time our opponent is and that one take down is the breaking point. I think for the most part our guys do a great job of that. We just need everyone to buy into the system. Other than that we are doing great things and I expect a lot out of the Cardinals this year. Coach Hall and I are very excited and can't stop talking about our team this year. Thank you for reading and many more post to come.
